Rail 2.0 or Technology for higher safety

Share article:

The Ministry of Industry and Trade perceives a fundamental need for the development of 5G networks and related services within the Czech Republic. Not only for this reason, the National Recovery Plan has set itself the goal of producing 25 studies on related topics. The studies dealt with spectrum aspects as well as with the digitisation of the enterprise or specific use-cases such as FRMSC or PPDR or 5G Broadcast. The scientific papers will be followed by a series of workshops to present the selected findings to the public.

The opening workshop will take place as early as 1 April 2025 and will focus on FRMSC, the use of 5G technology for inter-train and train set communication, aimed at improving safety on the tracks in general. Safety is a key issue for the rail transport segment.

Communication technology using the GSM-R technology standard is to be replaced by FRMSC, which is one of the application uses of 5G, in the future vision. However, this raises many questions not only in terms of implementation and usability, but also in terms of migration. The study addressed all these levels and analysed several scenarios, including economic evaluations of the impacts of such scenarios of migration to the higher technology standard FRMSC (from the original GSM-R).

Part of the discussion will be a presentation of FRMSC applications to support rail traffic in the Czech Republic, options for coverage by the FRMSC system, but especially an analysis of all potential migration scenarios and their specific impacts. The workshop discussion will also be enriched by the presence of representatives of market players and cross-border partners.
